To: All CFARS Operators
Fm: CIW861 – Greg McCormick
Ref: HF Exercise with 36 Sigs Regt. - 5 Nov 2016
Situation: Further to the message from CIW650 on 2 Nov, CFARS has been invited to assist 36 Sigs Regt with an HF voice communication practice session. 1 Sqn (Charlottetown) and 5 Sqn (Glace Bay) will be participating in a weekend exercise (5 Nov 2016 – 6 Nov 2016), during which voice nets will be established on both HF and VHF, while the units are deployed to the field.
Frequency Assignment / Call signs: 1 Sqn will be active on HF from 1700z (1400 ADT) to 2300z on 5 Nov 2016. They have agreed to use the following CFARS assignments, during the noted times:
Between 1700z to 2000z (1400 ADT to 1700 ADT):
Primary – CHARLIE
Secondary – DELTA
Between 2100z to 0100z (1800 ADT and 2200 ADT)
Primary – ALPHA
Secondary – XRAY
Net Control will be 1 Sqn, using the call sign SIG721.
Activity from 5 Sqn may be questionable on the HF net (details were still be finalized at this time). If so, they will use the call sign SIG725.
CFARS stations are permitted to secure after passing a short message (see below).
Message Content: As this is the first time that 36 Sigs can recall working with CFARS, it was agreed that demonstrating our reach might be a worthy exercise.
CFARS operators are asked to check in with NCS and pass a short message containing the following:
- Call sign
- Station Location – either MGRS or Lat / Long (deg. decimal) - see details below on MGRS
- Antenna type
- Power output
Please remember that ACP 125 voice protocols should be used to the extent possible. As previously mentioned, this is the first recent exposure that 36 Sigs has had to CFARS, and a solid professional impression will be to our benefit. Stations unfamiliar with ACP 125 can locate a copy of same on the CFARS website in the members-only section. (note: the link is broken - under investigation - this link provides the document - https:
Locating MGRS position: There are several online calculators that will provide a location in a variety of reference points. To convert latitude/longitude into MGRS, visit the following website:
Use either of the two options to make the calculations. The MGRS location will be displayed in the calculations window.
The MGRS is read in the following format "grid zone reference + 2 digits for easting + 2 digits for northing"
For example – CIW861 is located at 20TMS9292419413 – this is read as 20TMS 92 19 – in other words the grid zone reference (20TMS) and digits 1, 2, 6 and 7 from the 10 number sequence (9292419413) that follows the grid zone reference.
If you do not have latitude/longitude available, visit http://www.latlong.net and enter a civic address into the search window. The lat/long will be displayed below the map.
Contact: CIW861 is serving as CFARS contact with 36 Sigs Regt. Any issues or questions on this exercise can be directed to CIW861 at this email address. Note that CEOIs from 36 Sigs Regt. will be forthcoming, for reference only, likely late on Friday 4 Nov 2016.
